Freight (Domestic + International)
1.    Asia Pacific carriers , the biggest players in the air freight market with a 40.5% market share, also recorded the largest year-on-year decline (-5.8%). This is mainly attributable to (1) disrupted supply chains for the electronics and auto industries in the wake of the Japanese tsunami and earthquake and (2) slower economic growth in China. The strength of the region however is shown in the maintenance of the highest load factors (58.6%) well ahead of the 45.7% industry average for the month.
2.    European carriers posted a 1.3% decline and North American carriers recorded a decline of 3.0% compared to June 2010 levels.

Freight (Domestic and International combined)

  1. Domestic air freight is about 12% of total freight shipments. Commentary for this section focuses on combined (international and domestic figures). Load factors which stood at 46.5% for April, have dropped by some 4 percentage points compared to last May’s peak. This is reversing the strong boost to profitability that freight delivered in 2010.
  2. Although world trade has been expanding at an annualized rate of 10%, air freight markets have shrunk by 6% compared to their post recession peak in May 2010.

Despite the international economic downturn, the Port of Miami and Miami International Airport -- key drivers of the South Florida economy -- reported 2009 results that were down but still relatively good compared to other parts of the United States.

Speaking at the annual State-of-the-Ports briefing Wednesday in Miami, Bill Johnson, director of the Port of Miami, pointed out Miami was ``the busiest cruise ship port in the world'' with more than 4.1 million passengers in 2009. That was slightly off the 2008 figure.
